The first bit of the journey – Tick!!

W

ell we’ve got as far as Malawi. The days before leaving were predictably chaotic, with last minute shopping, packing as well as sorting out things for work. Typically, it also had to be the nicest May bank holiday for years too!! The journey itself was fairly uneventful (Heathrow to Johannesburg and then a flight to Blantyre here in Malawi). Rich and I met the two climbers (Mike and Jules) on the flight to Blantyre and they seemed suitably competent, which is a good start! Tonight we are staying at Julian’s wife’s mother’s house which is a beautiful place, set in stunning gardens (see photo). It does feels like this will be the last night of luxury though, and from here we are driving overland tomorrow into Mozambique where the idea is to drive as close as we can to the base of the mountain to set up a base camp. It hasn’t all gone entirely smoothly so far, as one bag didn’t arrive in Blantyre and so we’re three tents down. Luckily some people are still to leave the UK, so are going bring some spare ones.

We’ve got internet connection here so thought I’d post a few photos, while I had the chance. Once we get in the bush it’s likely to be SMS at best. Lisa Thrower as weaved her magic and so I can now text updates directly to this blog, but as you can imagine they will be fairly short messages and no photos. The photos might have to wait until we’re back in an area with internet connection.

Best go and help pack the vehicles, there’s an awful lot to squeeze in!!
